About our Program The Santa Susana High School Vocal Music program is passionate about the musical growth of students. Through focused learning, practice and performance the SSHS choirs excel in their musicality and vitality. Working with expert accompanists, choreographers, and costumers, the experiences students gain are at a professional level. With opportunities throughout the year to collaborate with theatre, film and stagecraft students, music majors, will gain an understanding of all of the options within the music profession. Attending multiple festivals and concerts gain them the awareness of what other groups are performing and give them opportunities to evaluate their and other's performances in a valid and conscience way. Certificates are offered to students who complete the coursework for an academy emphasis in Vocal Music.The program currently is comprised of six different types of choral classes while looking towards growth in the near future. Not all classes are offered every semester.
Courses Offered
Jazz Choir- "Abbe Road Jazz"This advanced performance ensemble will focus on a variety of complex and diverse music throughout the year with an emphasis on Swing, Latin, Ballad, A Cappella, and Improvisation. Various styles and themes will be presented through advanced competition level music. Music skills such as sight singing and reading music notation are required and will be built upon. Students will work in various groupings (quartets, small groups, full group, etc.) to build upon their strengths. This group attends multiple Jazz and Choral festivals and performs at private concerts throughout the year.Requirements: Audition. At least one year in another choral ensemble. Proof of past eligibility. The ability to sight read music, sings alone on a part and practice on your own. Completion of the introduction to Music Theory class. The commitment to be available outside of school time. Two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and one from a friend. Dedication and self-discipline.

Madrigal Choir-This performance ensemble will focus on a variety of music throughout the year with an emphasis on early music in the first semester and Classical to modern A Cappella concert music in the spring semester. Various languages, styles and themes will be presented through competition level music. Music skills such as sight singing and reading music notation will be built upon.Requirements: Audition. Proof of past eligibility. A basic understanding of music theory and the ability to practice a part outside of class. The commitment to be available outside of school time. Dedication and self-discipline.

Advanced Chamber Choir- (not currently offered) This advanced performance ensemble will focus on a variety of music throughout the year with an emphasis on complex and diverse music from a variety of genres. Various languages, styles and themes will be presented through advanced competition level music. Music skills such as sight singing and reading music notation are required and will be built upon. Students will work in various groupings (quartets, small groups, full group, etc.) to build upon their strengths.Requirements: Audition. At least one year in another choral ensemble. Chamber Choir (Title may change to Treble Choir)This performance ensemble will focus on a variety of music throughout the year with an emphasis on early music and seasonal music in the first semester and Classical to Modern concert music in the spring semester. Various languages, styles and themes will be presented through competition level music. Music skills such as sight singing and reading music notation will be built upon.Requirements: Audition. A basic understanding of music theory and the ability to practice a part outside of class. The commitment to be available outside of school time. Dedication and self-discipline.

Show Choir-This performance ensemble will focus on creating short musical theater type shows based on medleys of music. Medleys may be used from Broadway shows, eras, or multiple songs from the same composer. Various styles and themes of singing and dancing will be presented through competition level music. Working with a professional choreographer, singers will incorporate dance, costumes and expression into the music. Music skills such as sight singing and reading music notation will be built upon.Requirements: Audition. Dance experience. Proof of past eligibility. A basic understanding of music theory and the ability to practice a part outside of class. The commitment to be available outside of school time. Dedication and self-discipline.

Concert Choir-This beginning performance ensemble will focus on a variety of music throughout the year with an emphasis on accessible music for the purposes of training voices. Various languages, styles and themes will be presented through beginning level music. Music skills such as sight singing and reading music notation will be built upon.Requirements: Acceptance to the class. The commitment to be available outside of school time.
